A New Zealand tourist has died after allegedly falling on Thailand's Death Railway while taking a selfie with the view

Patrick Ward on Tuesday passed through the famous World War II rail line along cliffs above Krase Cave in Kanchanaburi province, 145 km from Bangkok when he fell 10 meters to the ground.

The 45-year-old allegedly slipped on the dilapidated stairs of the 75-year-old train after opening the door of the train to take photographs.

Horrific footage captured by onlookers showed Mr Ward falling from the train.

 The driver immediately stopped the train and sent rescue teams to the area. He performed CPR on the New Zealander for approximately 30 minutes before he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additional footage shows the team lifting his body back onto the tracks using a temporary winch system.

Investigating Inspector Lt Col Kiatisak Kerdchok of Sai Yok District Police Station said Mr Ward's neck was broken in the fall.
